Long-time jewellery staple of Violent Green, Sydney’s Petite Grand has always been a favourite among staff and customers. Specialising in delicate looking bracelets, fine rings and drop earrings, there is a lot to like about the label. We thought it was about time we interviewed founder Tanja Kovacevic about Petite Grand.
Hey Tanja, how are you?
I’m great, excited to do this interview with Violent Green who has been a great supporter of the brand from day one. Thank you!
Yeah, we've loved the label the moment we viewed the collection in the Sydney showroom. So Petite Grand was founded back in 2010. What was the initial goal and aesthetic of the label?
The goal was simply to make jewellery that I loved. Pieces that were different, unique and handmade, and could either be worn as a statement on their own, or worn layered back.
Five years in, do you feel Petite Grand has stayed true to its original ideals?
Yes, the collections increase in size each season (because I love designing and can’t stop) but I still follow the same aesthetic – design and make pieces with love and they will be loved.
The label has developed quite a name for itself. Could you have imagined this happening when you first started?
No. When I started I was hopeful but it has grown bigger then what I ever imagined!
One aspect of Petite Grand jewellery that is instantly recognisable is the silk chord on the bracelets. What drew you towards using silk as a material in your jewellery?
The bold colour, and the softness it offers. I love how silk can be mixed with gold and silver metals, and how well it complemented the rest of the collection.
You have also started using other materials not commonly associated with fine jewellery, such as shells. Was there any particular material you would love to work yet but haven’t had the chance?
Yes, I would love to work with resin.
The label has spread internationally and now sold the world over. Was there a particular place you liked to visit?
I just got back from Tokyo, which was inspiring! I can’t wait to go back.
Do you have a set method when designing jewellery, or do you have a more ‘organic’ design process?
Definitely organic. I surround myself with lots of beautiful metals and materials and start playing. Most of the time I have an idea that I make into a design, other times I make items without thinking about it too much and let the creativity flow.
In between designing, what do you do to unwind?
I take my dog Max for long walks. He has an abundant amount of energy, so by the time we are done we both super relaxed.
What can we expect next from Petite Grand?
I have recently launched a 14kt solid gold range; I would love to add more designs into this collection.
Thanks for taking the time out to do this interview Tanja and we can't wait to see what you get up to next.
